LINDSBORG – It looked like a win on the stat sheet for the Smoky Valley football team in their season and home opener on Friday, but unfortunately the scoreboard said other things and Larned beat the Vikings by 12, 36-24.

On paper the stats were in favor of the Vikings as they outgained Larned by 42 yards in total offense (228-270) with the Vikings getting 91 yards through the air and 179 on the ground while Larned gained 173 yards running the ball and  just 55 yards passing it.

Larned scored twice in the first quarter and held a 14-0 lead before Smoky Valley got their first touchdown of the 2024 season on a 19 pass from junior Ty Heitschmidt to Kristian Ryan to pull within six at 14-8.

Larned pulled away a bit in the second quarter after scoring twice on  a nine-yard run and scampering 74 yards for a second to take a commanding 30-8 lead. Heitschmidt connected with Kylar Ringle-Croomes on a 28-yard scoring play late in the half to pull back with two scores at 30-14 at the halftime break.

Larned tacked another score on the board early  in the fourth quarter before Heitschmidt found Jack Opat for a 14-yard scoring pass late to make the final score 36-24.

Heitschmidt led the Vikings offense from his quarterback spot where he completed 6-of-21 for 91 yards, three scores and one interception. Gavin Stambaugh had a big day running the ball for Smoky Valley, averaging 7.3 yards per tote with 155 yards on 21 carries.

Defensively, Andrew Lochard recorded 8.0 tackles, with Zeke Baker and Geo Luis taking down six and five, respectively, while each recording a quarterback sack.

Smoky Valley will be at home again next Friday, September 13 when they play host to Belle Plaine. The Dragons will enter the game 0-1 after losing 48-0 to Medicine Lodge in their season opener.
