MOUNDRIDGE WILDCAT FOOTBALL

GRILL, HECOX CARRY WILDCATS TO SEASON OPENING WIN

By Staff

BENNIINGTON – On Friday evening, the Moundridge football team literally ran their way back into the clutches of 11-man football with a resounding 43-6 hammering on the road at Bennington.

Making the jump back up to 11-man football was a test that the Wildcats seemed to pass with flying colors, at least for now.

Wildcat head coach Tyler O’Connor reflected on the season opening win and noted, “It was a great learning experience for us. All three phases had a well-rounded game, but there is  still plenty for us to work on.”

Moundridge came out on fire as they scored 40 of their 43 points in the first quarter thanks to a pair of long scoring runs by junior running back Paul Grill from 39- and 99-yards on his way to finishing the game with 133 yards on just seven carries.

Senior quarterback Henry Hecox directed a power offense as he scored the first touchdown of the season for Moundridge on a nine-yard run. Hecox finished with 41 yards on eight carries while also completing nine-of-twelve passes for 144 yards and two scores.

Kaizer Kanitz was the top pass receiver as he grabbed four passes for 58 yards including scoring receptions covering 28- and nine-yards. Bear Moddelmog had just one reception, but it covered 33 yards.

Overall, the Wildcats rang up 321 yards on 37 offensive plays which was split between 144 passing and 177 rushing on 24 carries. They lost just one turnover with a fumble and were only flagged three times for a minus-14 yards in penalties.

Bennington found the Wildcat defense to be a tough wall to break as they only managed 56 yards in total offense on 41 plays. The Bulldogs completed just six of sixteen passes for 36 yards and one interception while the Wildcat defense held their running attack to just 20 yards on 20 runs.

Individually for the Wildcat defense, Hecox was named on 11 tackles and senior Braden DenHartog had three tackles for a loss of yardage and a pair of quarterback sacks.

The Wildcats will be back on the road again next Friday, September 13 to play Sterling before making their season home opener on Friday, September 20 hosting Medicine Lodge.
