LADY BULLPUP TENNIS TAKE 1ST & 3RD AT HOME INVITATIONAL

DOUBLE TANDEMS SWEEP TOP 3 SPOTS ON PODIUM

By Staff

MCPHERSON – It was a good day for the McPherson high girls tennis program as their ‘Red Team’ not only won their own home invitational, but they also took fourth with their ‘White Team’ while sweeping all three top spots in the doubles competition.

“It is always fun to win your own home tournament,” pointed out Lady Bullpup head coach Tyler Brown. “The girls’ play was just outstanding today while w played 14 girls today.”

With the team split into two teams, the ‘Red’ team was comprised of Dragon Rodriguez, Avry Unruh, Riggs and Brodie Kuhn plus Kydall and Maryn Sandbo, while the ‘White’ team had Kennedy Tully, McKenna Paul, Erin Olson, Avery Eveland, Jordan Martens, and Piper VanCampen.

Winning the team championship was the Lady Bullpup ‘Red’ team as they scored 53 points, seven points ahead of second-place Goddard Eisenhower with 46. Derby had 42 points to finish third while the Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team placed fourth with 41. Newton rounded out the top five with 28 points. Salina Sacred Heart, Valley Center, and Great Bend were the other schools competing.

The strength of the Lady Bullpups showed up in the doubles competition where the two ‘Red’ team duos took first and second place. Sisters Riggs and Brodie Kuhn finished the day going 4-0 to take the championship trophy while sisters Kyndall and Maryn Sandbo went 3-1 and placed second. With the ‘White’ teams tandem of Erin Olson and Avery Eveland finishing third with a 3-1 record, the Lady Bullpups topped the podium with a first, second, and third-place finish.

Having the best day in singles competition was Dragon Rodriguez, just a freshman, who was seeded tenth but stepped up and finished third with a 3-1 record while playing for the ‘Red’ team. It was the first-time playing varsity for Rodriguez.

After losing her first match of the day, freshman Avery Unruh went 3-1 though she finished ninth in singles.

Coach Brown concluded his reflections on the Invitational by adding, “Dragon (Rodriguez) showed a lot of confidence and that she belongs on the big stage. Fellow freshman, Avery Unruh, had some little thing called nerves get her in her first match, but she finished extremely strong on the day to win the consolation bracket. Out of our nine entries, eight had at least a .500 record or better on the day and five of the nine had a winning record. I would say it was a pretty good day!”

The Lady Bullpup tennis team will be back on the competitive courts on Saturday, September 9 when they go on the road to the Salina Central Invitational.
