MCPHERSON – In a season opening matchup of cross-town schools, the McPherson College women’s soccer team put the second half hammer on Central Christian College to the tune of a 7-1 win in both teams season opener.
The Lady Tigers took an early 1-0 lead when Avery Lemmons found the back of the net on an assist from Amaleigh Mattison with 15:49 gone on the clock.
McPherson College got on the board less than a minute into the second half when Caitlin Buendia notched her first goal of the season on an unassisted play.

Over the next thirteen minutes the Lady Bulldogs scored four more goals beginning with McPherson’s own Olivia Rodriquez scoring off an assist from Courtney Wickham at the 46:28 mark, Lizette Loera put the ball in the net at the time of 49:08 with an assist from Lily Lougheed, and then both Buendia and Rodriquez earned their second scores of the game with Buendia getting an assist from Lauren Machado at 54:25 and Rodriquez took and assist from Buendia to give the Lady Bulldogs a huge 5-1 lead.
Maritza Gonzalez added a goal off an assist from Lizette Loera at 66:49 and Allyson Harrison closed out the McPherson scoring with a ball into the net off an assist from Alih Magana at the 86:48 mark.
According to the college website, Lady Bulldog head coach Mark Olson noted, “It’s always nice to start the season with a win. We did not start the game playing the way we wanted, but we certainly turned it around in the second half. Our freshman class did very well as the game progressed and the nerves calmed. Our returnees responded very well after halftime and played closer to their abilities.”
The seven goals were the most scored in a game by the Lady Bulldogs since October of 2009.
For the game, the Lady Bulldogs outshot the Lady Tigers 34-7 while holding a huge 17-4 advantage of shots on goal. Rodriquez led McPherson with six shots, including four on goal while Andrea Salas had five shots and Buendia put four on target.
The Lady Tigers were hampered by having just ten of twenty-five players on their roster even being available to play, meaning when sophomore Celena Vanhaezebrouk went down with an injury near halftime, Central College had to play with just nine players the entire second half.
Due to everyone having to play the entire game, the Lady Tigers began to show some fatigue in the second half as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for the win.

Sophomore Central Christian College goalkeeper, Katelyn Beckman had an outstanding game despite the score as she took on 17 shots on goal and managed to make 10 saves.

The Tigers, now 0-1, will be back in action next Friday evening, on the road in Lindsborg, Kan. against the Bethany College Swedes.
