INDIVIDUAL RESULTS WILL COUNT FOR CANTON/GALVA CROSS COUNTRY

By Staff

CANTON – Since they have but two high schoolers and four junior high runners, the Canton/Galva cross country program will be working on individual accountability and success for 2023.

With Lyle Silsby retiring after 18 years as head of the program, it has now been left in the capable hands of Tina McMannis to rebuild the program. McMannis has been serving as the head coach for the Eagle track/field program for eight seasons, so she knows the runners.

Junior Eagle Garrett Silsby will be the lone high school boy running cross country this fall, where he will look to work on better success than in 2022 when he finished tenth at the Wheat State League meet and thirty-sixth at state regionals.

Running for the Lady Eagles, it will be incoming freshman Honesty Williams. Williams ran the 800 and 1,600 meters in track as an eighth grader when she placed fourth in the 1,600 at the league meet.

For the Canton/Galva Junior High team eighth graders Jaycob Dieker, Aaron Long and Faith McMannis will be running for the Eagles.

In her reflections on the upcoming season, coach McMannis pointed out, “Our high school team will be small with just one boy and one girl running. Garrett Silsby is our most experienced runner, so we will look to him to lead the younger athletes. We are working on building our numbers with our junior high program where we have three and possibly a fourth running. This will help build our future high school program when they move up next season. I am excited to start the season and hope to be able to maintain and build on the program that coach Silsby established in his long tenure.”

The Canton/Galva cross country runners open the season on Wednesday, October 30 with a meet at Tescott.
