INMAN – Playing in the shadow of the football team, the Inman volleyball squad put together a magical season in 2022 with a fourth-place finish at the Class 2A state tournament.
Going 36-8 overall in 2022 and finishing 16-2 in Heart of America League action, the Lady Teutons have a couple of changes to maneuver as they look to make a return run in 2023 for a state title. It has been 29 years since Inman last won a state volleyball championship in 1994.
Maybe the biggest change for 2023 will be with who is leading the team as former head coach Megan Heckel has moved on to work with the Lyndon, Kansas school district, leaving Kristi Froese in charge of the Lady Teuton volleyball program and this will be her first time as a head coach while being assisted by Abby Bradstreet.
Coach Froese will need to fill holes left by the graduation of Alyssa Johnson, Maci Neufeld, and Kadence Welch, though the cupboard is not close to being empty with the return of at least four very key players from the 2022 squad.
Top among the returnees will be sophomore Suttyn Harris who had a dominating freshman season where she led the Lady Teutons in kills with 684, service aces with 40, digs with 297, and total blocks with 127 of which 90 were solo stops. Harris was named 1st Team at both the league level as well as Class 2A state level from the Kansas Volleyball Association while also gaining notice on the All-Class 2A state tournament team as well.
Senior Kambrey Woods, the Lady Teutons setter, also got notice on the All-Class 2A state tournament team plus making first-team all-league after she recorded a team high 1,055 assists, 121 digs and 23 service aces.
Chloe Schmidt is also back for her senior season as a Lady Teuton after earning second team all-league in 2022 with her 336 kills and 98 total blocks of which 72 were solo.
Kenna Woods also displayed many key roles as a freshman in 2022 where she scored 78 kills, 148 digs, 32 total blocks and 23 service aces coming off the bench.
Coach Froese noted that freshman Taylor Froese will be a newcomer that could crash the starting lineup in 2023.
The Lady Teutons will begin their run for a 2023 state title on Saturday, October 26 when they play host to the Lady Teuton Season Opening Invitational beginning at 9:00 a.m.
