CANTON/GALVA EAGLE CROSS COUNTRY

C/G HARRIERS OPEN 2024 SEASON RUNNING STRONG

By Staff

CANTON – The future looks bright for the Canton/Galva cross country program as they opened the 2024 season at Tescott Wednesday for the Tescott Invitational where a sophomore won, and four other freshmen runners medaled in the junior varsity races.

The lone Eagle senior running on varsity was Garrett Silsby who returned from an injury that cut short his junior season to finish 30th with a time of 22:51.55.

“In his first run of the season, Garrett (Silsby) finished almost a minute faster than when he started his junior season a year ago,” noted Eagle head coach Tina McMannis. “In our junior varsity runs all five runners medaled in what was their first time running a full high school 5K race.”

In the junior varsity girls run, sophomore Londyn Dietrich scored gold by finishing first with a run of 25:18.24 while freshman Faith McMannis placed second, just a split moment behind.

For the Eagle boys, the freshman trio of Jaycob Decker (2nd), Aaron Long (8th), and Everett Schmidt (9th) all medaled in their first full high school run.

Coach McMannis concluded her reflections on the season opening meet by saying, “I am proud of how the athletes performed to start the season. They have room for improvement while being off to a strong start. For the younger runners, medaling in the first meet is the confidence builder they need to pursue even bigger things this season. Be watching for some of them to move up to varsity level before the end of the season.”

Next up for the Eagle harrier will come on Thursday, September 12 at Hesston.
