CANTON/GALVA EAGLE BOYS BASKETBALL

FREE READ – EAGLE BOYS 4-2 AT HOLIDAY BREAK

            CANTON – As  they have so many times in recent seasons, the Canton/Galva boys’ basketball program took a winning record, this time 4-2, as they headed into the holiday break.

 

            After being  humbled with a season opening 14-point loss to Rural Vista, the Eagles took to the Goessel Bluebird Classic where they scored a pair of strong wins over Little River by four and host Goessel by 40.

 

            Elyria Christian brought the Eagles back to earth  after hanging a 29-poin win on them before Canton/Galva bounced back with an eight-point win over Marion at home and then closed out the December schedule with an eight-point win on the road at Centre.


 

            The Eagles are being led by sharp shooting sophomore guard Ethan Brozek who finished out the first month of the season averaging 19.25 points and connecting on 4.5 three-pointers over the first four games.

 

            After the holiday, the Eagles will  return to the hardwood with road game at Cunningham on Friday, January 3, followed by a home battle on Tuesday, January 7 with Wakefield and then traveling to Elyria Christian to take on the third ranked team in Class 1A Division II on Friday, January 10.

 

            Here is a summary of the Eagle games played in December:

 

            Friday, December 5 hosting Rural Vista, the Eagles opened the new season with a loss, 55-69.

           

            Trailing by eight, 22-30, at halftime, the Eagles went down by 14 by the end of the third quarter before being handed the final 14-point loss.

 

            Sophomore guards Ethan Brozek and Kustom Schamp tried to keep the Eagles in the game with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

 

Eagle Individual Scoring vs. Rural Vista = Ethan Brozek – 19 pts, 4-3pts, 10-pts 4th quarter; Kustom Schamp – 10 pts; Noah Collins – 9 pts, 2-3pts; Corbin Parsons – 7 pts; Jaxon Nightingale – 5 pts; Jase Beltz – 3 pts, 1-3pt; Camden Kruse – 2 pts.

 

On Monday, December 9, the Eagles scored their first win of the season with a four-point, 59-55 victory over Little River in the Goessel Bluebird Classic.

 

After Little River held a seven-point, 9-16, first quarter advantage plus a six-point, 22-28, halftime lead, the Eagles pulled within three, 44-47, by the end of the third quarter before outscoring the Redskins 15-8 in the final quarter to earn the tough, four-point win.

 

Ethan Brozek led the team in scoring with 22 points thanks to making five of the team’s nine three-pointers. Jaxon Nightingale joined him in double  digits with 12.

            In their second game of the Bluebird Classic on Friday, January 13 against Goessel, Canton/Galva dominated the scoreboard, connecting on 11 three-pointers in gaining a 40-point, 73-33 victory.

 

            The Eagles led from the opening tip, holding an eight-point, 14-6 first quarter advantage before putting 34 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to hold a commanding 48-17 lead at the halftime break. Pushing the lead out to as much as 37 at the end of the third quarter, the Eagles settled in for the final 40-point win.

 

            Sophomore Ethan Brozek hit another  five three-pointers in leading the team with 21 points as Kustom Schamp and Jaxon Nightingale both chipped in with 11 points. Nine Eagles put points by their name in the scorebook.

            The championship game of the Bluebird Classic was held on Saturday, December 14 where the Eagles lost to Class 1A Division II third-ranked Elyria Christian 34-63.

           

            Trailing by just 10, 22-32 at halftime, the Eagles could not break a cold spell shooting in the second half as Elyria Christian outscored Canton/Galva 12-31 to earn the 29-point win over the Eagles.

 

            Eagles Individual Scoring vs. Elyria Christian = Ethan Brozek – 15; Corbin Parson – 8; Kustom Schamp, Jase Beltz – 5; Jaxon Nightingale – 1. 3-Pts (7) = Brozek – 4; Parson – 2; Beltz  - 1.

 

            On Monday, December 16 the Eagles gained their third win of the season at home with an eight-point, 58-50 win over Marion. No other game information was available.

 

            The Eagles closed out the December schedule on Friday, December 20 at Centre where they earned the fourth win of the season with an eight-point, 65-57 win. No other game information was available.
