EAGLES DROP PAIR TO RANKED  CLIFTON/CLYDE

By Staff

CLYDE – The Canton/Galva boys’ and girls’ basketball team went on the road Tuesday with both playing top-ten ranked Clifton/Clyde teams which in turn defeated both the Eagle boys, 49-74, and the Lady Eagles, 38-53.

For the Lady Eagles, they fell behind 5-16 by the end of the first quarter to Class 1A Division I fourth-ranked Clifton/Clyde, but pulled to within seven, 14-21, at the halftime break. Struggling to get the offense going in the third, Canto/Galva fell behind by 14 at 18-32 at the end of three before finishing out with the final 15-point loss, 38-53.

“Our defensive intensity was good all night,” according  to Lady Eagle head coach David Ediger. “The ladies really followed the game plan from start to finish defensively, we got the lead down to seven at the half but started out poorly in the third quarter which was the difference in the game.”

Trinity Espinoza led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 15 while Malia Hoppes scored eight. Seven Lady Eagles put points in the scorebook for the game.

Coach Ediger concluded his post-game reflections by noting, “We showed quite a bit of rust offensively and could not keep our spacing. When we could not execute our press breaker, we turned the ball over more than we would have liked. But, overall, I was really pleased with our effort. We did not get out hustled and battled all night. Playing the fourth-ranked team that well, on the road, shows that we have improved. Despite the loss, this game should give us some confidence for the rest of the season.”

The Eagle boys, also playing a ranked team as the Clifton/Clyde boys are ranked sixth in Class 1A Division I,  fell behind by 11, 10-21, by the end of the first quarter and trailed by 22, 24-46, at the halftime break. After the half, Clifton/Clyde continued to add points to the lead and the Eagle finished  out with the final 25-point, 49-74 loss.

Despite the loss, Ethan Brozek had a huge night for Canton/Galva, connecting on five three-pointers in scoring 19 points while Kustom Schamp just missed double digits  with nine.

Both the Eagle boys and Lady Eagles are now 5-6 for the season as they look to get back in the win column on Friday at home when they host Centre.
